Our take
Contexto turns the daily word puzzle on its head. You do not get letters; you get a number. Each guess is ranked by how close its meaning is to the secret word, according to a language model trained on lots of text. A guess ranked 2,000 is far away; one ranked 12 is very warm.
The pleasure is in the drift. You start broad (an animal, a place, a feeling), notice which guesses rise, and slowly narrow the field. Sometimes the ranking is surprising, because words that appear in similar sentences count as close even when they mean different things, and working out why is half the fun.
There is one puzzle a day, with earlier days available to play. A hint button helps when you are stuck. Adverts appear on the free version and there is a paid option to remove them; nothing else is behind a payment.
A first sitting
Start with three very different guesses, for example “animal”, “city” and “emotion”, and follow whichever ranks best.
Where to stop
The secret word, or twenty minutes, whichever comes first. If you are past fifty guesses, take a hint rather than grinding.
