Our take

Go is one of the oldest board games still played, and one of the deepest: two players place black and white stones on a grid and try to surround more territory than the other. The rules fit on a postcard, and the game opens up for a lifetime. OGS is one of the most welcoming places to learn it online.

You can play live games against people at your level, or correspondence games where each player has a day or more per move. Correspondence go is a wonderful antidote to rushing: one move with your morning coffee, one in the evening. Smaller boards (9 by 9) make short live games of ten or fifteen minutes.

The site is free and paid for by its players. Supporter plans exist and mainly add automatic AI reviews that show where a game turned. A Learn section and puzzles help new players get started.

Where to stop

The end of a game. If you lose a close one, review it rather than starting another straight away.
